Walking on thin ice
There are
varied types of news. Some appear like a breeze and some like hurricanes. And
there is some news that is unpredictable and gives
the intensity of an earthquake that shakes the earth underneath our feet.
Just a
few days back, our academic director, KM Srivastava came to Kottayam to take us
to Malaya Manorama, a reputed Malayalam daily, to make us familiar with the
concept of integrated newsrooms. As the
day progressed, I realised that he was a true
gentleman. He taught us to think beyond
the conventional and to see the different sides of everything.
The next
thing we know is that he suffered a heart attack and is no more. It made me
aware of the fragile nature of life. The nature of life is such that we are
always walking on thin ice. We do not know when it will break and take us
inside the icy cold water freezing us to death.
This forced me to unwind my life. Have I accomplished anything
worthwhile in the last 23 years of my life? Alas, I didn’t have an answer.
I
realized most of us live life believing that there is always a tomorrow. In
short, we never really exploit life. Living life like it is our last day on
Earth is hard. Distractions
fill our days. To keep temptations and distractions at bay calls for an abundance of willpower and hard work.
This
event inspired me to do the things I constantly dreamed of. I believe
everyone wants to do so many things but it always takes a backseat due to one
reason or another. We have become experts in making excuses. We wait our
whole life for the auspicious moment, that first day of a month or a year, but
we forget that there is no opportune occasion than the present.
Death of
an individual, especially a loved one
teaches us so many things. It shows us that life on earth is very limited and
it depends on us how we manage it. Friends and family members will not be there
forever. Hence, we should make an effort to reach out to them from time to time
and put our feelings across. Repenting it later is useless. Death teaches us to
live life intensely, to enjoy a beautiful conversation, to experience sadness
and happiness with full consciousness, to find peace in a child’s smile and
beauty in the butterflies. These little details make life pleasant because once
we are dead everything ceases to exist.
